A laptop (or notebook) is a personal computer designed for easy carrying and light enough to keep above the knee when in use. A typical laptop integrates most of the components of a desktop computer, including screen, keyboard, a pointing device (a touchpad, also known as a trackpad, and / or pointing stick), speakers, and includes a battery, in one small and lightweight unit. Rechargeable batteries (if any) is charged from the AC adapter and usually save enough energy to run a laptop for two to three hours in the original, depending on the configuration and management of computer resources.

Weight 3-12 pounds a modern laptop (1,4-5,4 kg); older laptops are usually more severe. Most laptops are designed in the form of the fold to protect the screen and keyboard when closed. Tablet modern laptops have a complex combination of keyboard and screen, allowing the panel swivel screen and then lay down on a tablet laptop keyboard usually has touchscreen display and several, including handwriting recognition, or drawing.

Laptop was originally considered a "small market niche" and is considered most suitable for the "specialized field applications" such as "military, the Internal Revenue Service, accountants and sales representatives". In the year 2008 more laptops than desktops sold in the U.S..
